WHY “NATURAL" IS OFTEN NOT SO NATURAL

Natural, organic and conscious skincare is hot, it’s an ongoing trend. A green trend which is good for all of us and our planet. More and more natural skincare brands are popping up, probably because we all might become more aware of the long-term effects of conventional skincare on our bodies. 

But can we really trust every product labelled natural or organic? Very unfortunate to say the answer is no. 

The word “natural” is not protected by law and there it starts with the confusion. Even when a brand contains just a few natural ingredients, they’re allowed to name the product natural. 

And that is where a bunch of conventional brands jump in to maximize their profit by “greenwashing” their products. They use smart marketing tricks and often false claims which is called green washing. Please note that it’s not only happening in the beauty industry, you can even find green washed products in your supermarket.

How to prevent green washing? You’ll simply have to get used checking the ingredients list.

We understand it might be hard to know what to avoid. You’ll have to consider all ingredients that go into a product as much as what’s left out. Per example no parabens, no sulphates and made with natural extracts doesn’t mean there aren’t any nasty ingredients in it.

This means that the ingredients maintains it’s original chemical shape and structure, the chemistry of the ingredient hasn’t been changed (the so called anhydrous products).

Water-based products needs a preservative, and to make a cream or lotion you’ll need an emulsifier in order to mix the oil and water (so called naturally-derived ingredients). 

Those ingredients like emulsifiers or preservatives have undergone various chemical reactions such as fermentation or hydrolysis. Our naturally-derived ingredients are truly plant-based without synthetic chemicals, and represented in the The Cleansing, The Luminous and The Youth. 

Our natural preservative is obtained from anise and fennel, and the sodium salt of levulinic acid. 

Nature-identical ingredients are not derived from nature but synthetically processed in a lab. 

Although the chemical structure has been made practically identical to the same ingredient found in nature, LIV Botanics doesn’t use nature-identical ingredients. We stick to nature as close as possible.
